Why curved

Same speed, more work.

In a small lab study, walking on a curved, non-motorized treadmill took about 37 percent more energy than walking on a motorized treadmill at the same speed. Running took about 17 percent more.

On a curved deck there is no motor to keep the belt moving. You move it, and your stride sets the pace. Results vary by person, pace and machine.
